Focus Features has obtained the rights to the drama film The motorcyclistshero Austin Butler (Elvis), Jodie Comer (Kill Eve), AND Tom Hardy (Poison). The piece about the period of the crime, by the director Jeff Nichols (Mud, Loving), premiered at Telluride this fall, and was initially slated for an award-winning release on December 1 by 20th Century Studios, but was removed from Disney’s calendar last month.
Sources said it was New Regency’s decision, and not Disney’s, to look for a new distributor. The production company also decided to remove it The motorcyclists from the Disney calendar due to the inability of its actors to promote the film, which has a production budget of $40 million, during the SAG-AFTRA strike.
The film is set in the 1960s and stars Jodie Comer and Austin Butler as a married couple involved in a rowdy, unctuous biker gang ruled by a hot-blooded leader, played by Tom Hardy.
The motorcyclists is now eyeing a 2024 release.
