Karen Gillan and Hugh Bonneville to star in comedy-drama about Cancel Culture called DOUGLAS IS CANCELED

Karen Gillan (Guardians of the Galaxy) will be the protagonist next Hugh Bonneville (Downton Abbey) in an upcoming cancel culture-themed comedy-drama titled Douglas is cancelled from Steven Moffat (Sherlock, Doctor Who).

Douglas is cancelled will see Bonneville play “a middle-aged, widely respected TV host called Douglas Bellowes while Gillan plays his wily sidekick Madeline. Douglas lives a perfect life. He enjoys his privileged status as a national treasure and host of the current affairs program “Live at Six” while off-air he shares a harmonious home with his newspaper editor wife Sheila.

But “their world is turned upside down when, at a family wedding, he is overheard making an ‘ill-advised joke.’ When a guest threatens to expose Douglas on social media, the rumor mill explodes and sparks a digital firestorm that quickly upends his life and her career. With 2 million social media followers, tech-savvy co-host Madeline could throw Douglas a lifeline by posting in her defense of her…but will she?”

Gillan said in a statement: “To torment a man, let alone a man called Douglas, for four episodes – armed with Steven Moffat’s writing – is a great privilege of which I will enjoy every minute.”

Bonneville said: “Working with a director like Ben again, on Steven’s acerbic and witty script, with an ensemble of this caliber, is as daunting as it is exciting.”

Moffat added: “I just sat down and wrote this. I didn’t even tell anyone what I was doing. And now it’s all happening, thanks to her amazing Vertue (famous TV producer and, in a rare moment of weakness, my wife). I can’t believe we got the mighty Hugh Bonneville to play Douglas and lured my old friend Karen Gillan from Hollywood to play Madeline. And if that wasn’t enough, we have Ben Miles, Alex Kingston, Nick Mohammed and Simon Russell Beale. It’s the kind of cast that makes you terrified to walk into the room.

Together with Gillan and Bonneville in the limited series there are Ben Miles (Hijack), Alex Kingston (A discovery of the witches, Dodger), Nick Mohammed (Ted Lasso) AND Simon Russell Beale (Thor: Love and Thunder). Ben Palmer (The intermediaries) directs the series.

The four-part series is currently in production in London.
