Written and directed by Carney, whose credits include the song-centric film Once, Start from scratch And street singingThe movie debuted at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, where Apple Original Films jumped on it and, after an all-night bidding war, scored one of the festival’s most spectacular selections. It was Apple’s biggest deal in Park City since the eventual Best Picture Oscar winner CODA in 2021.
Flora and son will hit theaters in late September before launching on Apple TV+.
Hewson, the daughter of U2 frontman Bono, plays a single mother in Dublin who wants to use their shared love of music to get along with her troubled teenage son Max (Orén Kinlan), who is on the wrong track. Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays a failed online guitar teacher with a troubled past of her own that gives her the tools to do just that. Jack Reynor also stars.
Hewson and Gordon-Levitt said during a panel discussion at Deadline’s Contenders Film: Los Angeles that the pair wrote one of the script’s key songs, “Meet Me in the Middle,” on the spot and that they met on the first day on set . hit. It became a key scene when the two performed the duet on a rooftop.
