Zack Snyder recently discussed its R-rated cut Rebel moon and teased some things fans can expect. I was actually looking forward to watching this movie and I hope Snyder makes a really interesting movie with a good story.
During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Snyder said, “I wrote the script, in a vacuum, just like I would with my normal aesthetic: very tough, very sexy, violent, crazy, everything turned up to 11.”
As he was developing the project, he initially thought he could “compress it into an adventure for a broader audience.” He would take that R-rated movie he wrote and cut it down to PG-13, but then when he met with Netflix to talk about the film, everything changed when they convinced him to “go back to your original subversive R-rated version.”
Snyder said, “I was like, ‘Yeah, that would be awesome.’ And they say, ‘Then we could have, you know, you could do your own thing and we could have it as a separate piece of, you know, content.’”
The director later said: “I’m extremely proud of the PG-13 version of the film. I really am. I think it’s really fun and it’s clean and beautiful but, again, just that sort of weird darkness of the R-rated version if that was kind of my original thesis about what the movie could be, that’s what we did . That’s what we did in the R-rated version.”
Snyder had previously spoken about the extended version of his film in which he would offer viewers “nearly an hour of extra content.” He explained: “I think it’s a legitimate version of the extended universe. You can really see a lot. It’s just more painted all the way. The director’s [cut] it’s a deep dive to get acclimated, which I’ve famously done throughout my career. I don’t know how I ended up in the world of Director’s Cuts, but what I can say is that, for me, Director’s Cuts have always been something I’ve had to fight for in the past and no one wanted that. He was this bastard child that I was always trying to put together because they felt there was a deeper version.
In the story, a ragtag group of rebels rises up to fight against a giant, evil empire. It is set in a “peaceful colony on the edge of the galaxy that finds itself threatened by the armies of the tyrannical regent Balisarius. They send a young woman with a mysterious past to seek out warriors from nearby planets to help them make a stand against the Tyrant.
This is a two-part film and each part will have an R-rated edition for fans to watch as well. Movie stars Charlie Hunnam, Ed Skrein, Bae Doona, Djimon Hounsou. Ray Fisher, Jena Malone, Ed Skrein, Stuart Martin, Cary Elwes, Corey Stoll, Michiel Huismann, Anthony Hopkins, AND Alfonso Herrera.
Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire will arrive on Netflix on December 22 after a limited theatrical release.
