Andy Muschiettithe director behind The Flashis opening up about the harsh reception his superhero film faced. Despite the initial hype, included James Gunn calling it “one of the greatest superhero films ever made,” the DCEU film ended up struggling with both critics and the box office.
When The Playlist asked if the backlash had shaken his confidence, Muschietti got candid about how he feels now.
“No, we just moved forward and understood that sometimes there’s a headwind and a project that you put a lot of work into. And we’re very proud of that. I think it’s a great movie.”
The director believes part of the problem was that people were judging without even looking at him.
“A lot of people didn’t see it. But you know how things are these days: People don’t see things, but they like to talk bad about it and jump on the bandwagon. They don’t really know. People are angry for reasons that aren’t related to these things.”
Now, I really liked the movie. It wasn’t perfect, but I enjoyed watching it and there were a lot of interesting moments. That said, most people I know who saw the movie hated it. So I’m not sure his logic works here.
He went on to address one of the most talked about issues surrounding the film, the controversy surrounding it Ezra Miller.
“Of course, we had a publicity crisis with Ezra, that’s undeniable. And I don’t question that. But yes, we love the movie. And we actually really recommend it.”
While The Flash earned a 63% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, its global box office gross of $271.4 million fell far below expectations for a film set to reset the DCEU.
Now, with Gunn and Pietro Safran at the helm of the new DCU, Muschietti is already looking ahead. He is ready to lead The brave and the bolda new Batman film that will be part of this rebooted cinematic universe.
The next big chapter of the DCU begins with Supergirlhitting theaters June 26, followed by Lanterns later next year. And fans can expect it The man of tomorrowa sort of Superman sequel, arriving in 2027.
Although The Flash didn’t have the success Warner Bros. had hoped for, Muschietti didn’t let the criticism drag him down.
