DOCTOR WHO showrunner Russell T. Davies praises this season’s “terrifying” villain played by Neil Patrick Harris

Fans are preparing for another season of Doctor whowhich will begin with specials featuring the return of the Fourteenth Doctor’s stars (David Tennant) reunite with Donna (Catherine Tate) as they fight a new villain. The showrunner will also return Russell T. Davieswho hyped the upcoming special episodes and has some great things to say about the show’s new villain, the Toymaker, played by Neil Patrick Harris.

Davies recently spoke to Total Film magazine about casting Harris in the classic but mostly forgotten role Doctor who bad, saying, “You need an amazing actor to match David at the height of his powers.” Harris is best known for playing Doogie Howser, MD as a teenager on the show of the same name in the ’90s, then starring in a hit ensemble comedy how I Met Your Mother from 2005 to 2014. He also had success on Broadway and enjoyed playing a villain on the Netflix show, A series of unfortunate events.

Davies continued:

“Remember this is David’s TARDIS, his Doctor, his name in the credits. It’s not easy for guest stars to step into a situation like that. You need that dimension, you need that experience, you need that ability to match him, otherwise you’re in danger of the Doctor tap dancing around you. That’s what Neil brings… a huge performance that’s truly terrifying.”

Michael Gough originated the character of the Toymaker in the classic Doctor who Series 3 serial The Celestial Toymaker, in which the villain faced off against the First Doctor, played by William Hartnell. The Toy Maker is a mischievous villain who likes to trap others and force them to play childish games, putting their freedom on the line. The Toy Maker is also a sore loser who rigs games in his favor.

Harris will appear in the last of the three Doctor who 60th anniversary specials, titled “The Giggle”.

THE Doctor who Special 60th anniversary episodes include “The Star Beast,” which premieres Saturday, Nov. 25; “Wild Blue Yonder” Saturday, Dec. 2; and then “The Giggle” on Saturday, December 9th.
