DEADPOOL 3 Director Says Marvel Film Will Pay Homage to Key Scene from STAR WARS: RETURN OF THE JEDI

Deadpool 3 director Shawn Levy continues to talk about the highly anticipated film as production is currently suspended due to the actors’ strike. He says a lot about the film without really revealing anything, but fans continue to read between the lines of his comments.

In a recent interview with Esquire, the director revealed that the film will pay homage to a key moment in the series Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. I guess this shouldn’t be surprising given that Levy is a huge Star Wars fan and is also in the process of developing his own Star Wars film for Lucasfilm.

So, from which scene Return of the Jedi Want Deadpool 3 pay homage? Luke Skywalker’s final confrontation with his father, Darth Vader, in the Emperor’s throne room. The scene where Darth Vader provokes Luke Skywalker by asking him to seek out her sister Leia and bring her to the dark side. He explained:

“I vividly remember the scene where Luke hides from Vader in the Emperor’s room and Vader gives the speech that ends with ‘If you won’t turn to the dark side, maybe your sister will.’ There was a dead silence [in the theater]. Absolute silence. Suddenly, Vader pressed the wrong button. Luke comes screaming out of the shadows and into town in a lightsaber battle against Vader. The feeling I had: the forty seconds of silence from the audience, then the show and the emotion, remained imprinted not only in my eyes but in my heart.

He went on to explain the “Jedi moment,” which he included in the film, saying:

“For a key scene in the film, I said to my stunt and action team, ‘Guys, this is the Jedi moment.’ I pulled up the Vader and Luke scene on my phone and re-studied how it was photographed, how it was blocked, the framing, the pacing. The avid Star Wars fan will see the shot in my film “Deadpool” which was inspired by a moment I saw in a theater decades ago. It’s a memory forever. And this is a treasure.”

Levy shares no other details about the Star Wars-inspired Dead Pool sequence, but there’s no doubt fans will know it when they see it. The director has already talked about how Deadpool 3 will have as much heart and emotion as his other films, saying:

“I will say this: Fuck more than you think. I’m so wary… but one thing that Ryan and I were very close on was wanting to make Deadpool 3 very consistent and continuous with the franchise.” DNA, but to see where we might evolve in this third film.”

Levy went on to explain that “evolving” the Deadpool film franchise was an easy challenge to tackle once one key story detail was established:

“We once knew it was going to be a Wolverine/Deadpool movie, my God! What a gift for any storyteller. Because not only do you have two iconic actors playing their most iconic roles, but you have two characters whose dynamic is already notorious tense. And whenever you’re dealing with characters who start from a place of deep dislike, conflict and difference from each other… the mouth [Deadpool]and the same grumpy, laconic man of few words [Wolverine], what a fantastic formula for storytelling. And ultimately the film has a lot more character and depth and heart than I think anyone expects.”

Deadpool 3 has been removed from its May 4, 2024 release date, and as of now, no new date has been announced by Marvel Studios, but we know it will be delayed.
