After Matthew Perry’s death on Saturday, previous comments about how he wanted to be remembered have resurfaced and are making the rounds again.
Spoken of Question with Tom Power Podcast in 2022 to promote his memoir, Friends, lovers and the great terrible, Perry spoke about his hopes for his posthumous legacy.
“I want to be remembered as someone who lived well, loved well and was a seeker,” Perry said. “And (my) most important thing is that (I) want to help people,” he added. “That’s what I want. The best thing about me is when an alcoholic or drug addict comes to me and says, ‘Will you help me?’ “I can say yes and follow through and do it,” he said.
Still, Perry knew exactly what his obituary would be, as he detailed in another post shared on social media site X.
“When I die, I know people will talk about it Friends, friends, friends. And I’m happy about that, happy that I’ve done a good job as an actor and that I’ve given people many opportunities to make fun of my problems on the World Wide Web… but if I die, like… Like for my successes, it would be nice if friends stood behind the things I did to help other people. I know it won’t happen, but it would be nice.”
Among his achievements, Perry leaves behind the Perry House in Malibu, a sober living facility for men. He also wrote The end of desire a piece he thought was a personal message to the world, an exaggerated depiction of me as a drunkard. “I had something important to say to people like me and people who love people like me,” he wrote in his memoirs.
Sad news, I was aware of his trip.
Rest in peace, Matthew Perry, who chose to use his struggles with his own demons to help those of others????️ pic.twitter.com/8TIMPhP097
