Here’s an interesting revelation about one of the film projects that Marvel Studios was developing in 2008, the same year Iron Man It was released. It turns out the studio was actually making a Fugitives film project! This was long before the Hulku series was developed.
It was 2010 Drew Pearce he was hired to write the film’s screenplay. He was relatively unknown at the time, but he continued to write the screenplay Iron Man 3. Fugitives was actually a very serious project for Marvel at one point and Pearce revealed it in the newly released book MCU: The Kingdom of Marvel Studios that the project was very close to completion. He said:
“The code name for Runaways was Small Faces. [We had] a production office with the Small Faces logo on it, done in the style of the Runaways logo.”
He confirmed that “Small Faces” was a nod to the influential 1960s rock band of the same name. He went on to add:
“So yeah, it was a real thing. I don’t think people understand it, but it was going to be a ‘go’ movie, you know?”
So what happened? Pearce said he became concerned about the project when the focus shifted to The Avengers and continuing the stories of each of the members of the superhero team. Eventually he got the call from above that the project was dead. Previously he had spoken about the project saying:
“Basically, The Avengers came along and everything else about Marvel was put on hold for a year. But the script is there, we’re good to go. It’s a bit like [being] at the airport while you wait for your seat to take off with Marvel, and hopefully we’ll get a seat next year. Fingers crossed. They’re very happy about it, so let’s hope it happens.
The film was scrapped in favor of a gamble Guardians of the Galaxywhich was the right choice because those Guardians movies were really cool!
Years later, Marvel Television began developing its own Runaways television show. That series was developed by Josh Schwartz AND Stefania Selvaggia, who were chosen as showrunners and production began in 2017. The show lasted three seasons and was all good. I would have liked to see how the film would have turned out, especially in the early days of Marvel when they made great films.
THE Fugitives the comic was created by Brian K. Vaughan and artist Adriano Alfonso, and follows a group of teenagers who discover that some family secrets are bigger than others when they discover that their parents are actually supervillains. Fleeing their homes, the boys band together and begin a journey to discover their parents’ origins and inherited powers, while trying to undo the evil their parents committed.
