The notebook It could have been a very different film if Britney Spears starred with Ryan Gosling in the film. Spears’ audition video for the lead role of Allie has been shared online and the film’s cast say she beat out many of the best young actresses of her time.
“Britney beat out some of the best female actresses at the time. Scarlett Johansson, Claire Danes, Kate Bosworth, Amy Adams, Jamie King and Mandy Moore auditioned for the role. Britney beat them all. “Everybody especially this year wanted this role,” casting director Matthew Berry told the BBC Daily email.
Barry said the singer was “not just good, she was phenomenal” in the role. On the audition tape, Spears reads the lines to Allie in a pivotal scene in which the fictional character reveals her plans to marry another man. Spears slowly breaks down in tears as she continues her lines, showcasing her emotional range and acting skills.
The role eventually went to newcomer Rachel McAdams, which Spears was ultimately grateful for as she was not thrilled with the costumes she had to wear.

Spears would eventually quit acting because she no longer felt well after her film experience overlap. In her memoir, Spears discusses her difficulties with method acting as she struggled to “break out of character” when not filming.
“I really became a different person. Some people do method play, but are usually aware that they are doing it. But I’m not divorced at all,” says Spears.
“I hope I never come close to this occupational hazard again. Living like that, being half yourself and half a fictional character, is a mess. After a while you don’t know what’s real anymore.”
