Director Scott Derrickson is known for making many highly successful horror films and dark dramas including The Exorcism of Emily Rose, Left, Doctor StrangeAND The black phone. But first and foremost he’s a movie fan, and one of his favorites of the year is Barbie. Derrickson listened to The Discourse podcast to talk about movies, and went so far as to say that he believes Barbie should win the Oscar for Best Picture!
“I think Barbie is the best movie I’ve seen this year—well, maybe not; I saw this horror movie, When Evil Lurks at Fantastic Fest, but Barbie and When Evil Lurks are my two favorite movies of the year, and they couldn’t be further from each other. Barbie is a good example of populist intellectual property treated with real brilliance. It’s an extraordinary film on every level. I think it should probably win Best Picture; the writing is so smart, so clever and subversive, the acting is amazing, and it’s so funny, it’s artistic in its imagery, in its style, it’s just a fantastic film.
I agree with him. That film was brilliant and I think it deserves at least the nomination, if not the win. The film definitely has a chance, not only did audiences and critics love the film, but it grossed over a billion dollars at the box office. I don’t think anyone expected this movie to do so well.
What do you think? Do you think Barbie will be nominated for Best Picture?
