While I like it Michele Baiait is the first Transformers movie, I feel like Hornet I finally got it right. I loved the story it told and thought it had the right balance of good storytelling and action. From what I’ve seen, many fans of the Transformers movies loved it Hornet! I’d like to think that most people have an idea of what good storytelling is, but I’m starting to see that slip away these days.
Independently, Hornetwhich was directed by Travis Knightit was a big step in the right direction for the franchise, and then Transformers: Rise of the Beasts came out and for some reason the franchise returned to absolute ridiculousness. But it was actually worse than many other films directed by Michael Bay in the franchise.
So what the hell happened?! Why did the creative team use this film to evolve the franchise? It’s like this movie took the franchise several steps back. Well, it turns out that some fans didn’t like the fact that there wasn’t much Bayhem action in the movie. In one of the special features included on the film’s Blu-ray, franchise producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura shared:
“Well, one of the interesting things about ‘Bumblebee’ was that, even though people seemed to really love the movie, a lot of the fans weren’t entirely happy with the scope of it. It was very intimate, and it was self-consciously intimate, and there was a refrain that came out of a large group of them, which was, ‘Where are the explosions? Where is all that stuff?'”
I honestly don’t remember anyone asking “where the explosions were”. Hornet, almost all the reviews I read were positive and did not complain about the lack of action. But maybe I missed something. Whatever it was, what did we get Transformers: Rise of the Beasts it was a direct response to the producers who thought people wanted more action and bigger.
Ultimately, they sacrificed good storytelling for more than anything else. It’s a shame, and it seems like they’ll continue to miss the mark in these franchises, especially now that they’ve introduced GI Joe into the franchise, which makes everything even more absurd, especially since they don’t even have a plan. okay!
These film producers and executives really need to get their heads straight. They have a really cool opportunity here to make some really cool movies, and they’re wasting it and wasting it halfway.
