Blue Beetle has basically finished its theatrical run, and the film is currently available to watch digitally and will be released on 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD on October 31st. Well, it turns out that the final box office numbers for Blue Beetle make it the lowest-grossing DCEU film of all time.
The film grossed $71.2 million in the United States and Canada and $56.8 million in overseas territories, so in total it only grossed $128 million globally. Also Shazam! The fury of the gods top it by grossing over $133 million at the box office.
Regardless of the film’s bombing at the box office, DC Studios head James Gunn has said that the character will continue in the DCU, so it seems that Jaime Reyes (Xolo Maridueña) is a character that Gunn and the studio are committed to regardless of low box office numbers.
The film received a lot of positive reviews, but I don’t think it lived up to what many of those reviews said. I thought it was a pretty generic superhero movie. As for why more people haven’t gone to see the movie… Blue Beetle is an obscure DC character and there’s also clearly a lack of interest in DC movies. This will definitely affect the next Aquaman sequel.
In the film, “Recent college graduate Jaime Reyes (Xolo Mariduena) returns home full of aspirations for his future, only to find that home is no longer where he left it,” the synopsis reads. “As he searches for his purpose in the world, fate intervenes when Jaime unexpectedly finds himself in possession of an ancient relic of alien biotechnology: the Scarab. When the Scarab suddenly chooses Jaime as its symbiotic host, he is granted an incredible suit of armor capable of extraordinary and unpredictable powers, forever changing his destiny as he becomes the superhero Blue Beetle.”
