Spanish police are investigating the mysterious disappearance of a Pablo Picasso painting that disappeared on the way to an exhibition in Granada. The work “Still Life with Guitar”, created in 1919, is estimated at 600 thousand euros (55 million rubles). Note ed.) and belongs to a private collector from Madrid.

The miniature gouache, measuring only 12.7 x 9.8 centimeters, was to be part of the exhibition “Still Life. The infinity of inertia” at the CajaGranada Foundation. The painting arrived in southern Spain in a minibus along with other works of art, but after unpacking it was discovered to have disappeared. Cargo was accepted and checked against the fund, but some of the work was incorrectly numbered, so a detailed reconciliation did not occur immediately. A few days later, when the staff began assembling the exhibit, the curator and head of the exhibition department noticed the loss.
The foundation’s management immediately contacted the National Police and announced their readiness to cooperate with the investigation. Spanish media reported that the van carrying the paintings may have stopped near Granada overnight and that the theft may have occurred at this point.
Meanwhile, It is not the first time that the works of the legendary artist have disappeared. Over the past decades, Picasso’s paintings have repeatedly become the target of thieves. In 2007, two canvases worth a total of 50 million euros were stolen from his grandson’s house in Paris, and in 2009, the artist’s album, worth more than 8 million euros, disappeared from a museum in Paris.
By the way, we previously wrote that a Picasso painting that disappeared 80 years ago will be sold at auction in Paris. Read more here.
