THE WALKING DEAD bosses tease the show’s future to celebrate its 15th anniversary

The walking dead premiered on AMC in 2010 to huge fan response, unprecedented in the genre. The series was a new take on the zombie story, focusing on people who survived an apocalyptic event that transformed their peers into brain-hungry “walkers”.

As they sought to find others who could rebuild civilization and a new life together, we saw them meet dangerous enemies, fall in love, and lose friends and loved ones in unprecedented situations. It was captivating and exciting, and held our attention for eleven seasons before ending the flagship series and spawning a handful of spin-offs.

But since the spinoff shows are also coming to their natural ends, does this mean the entire Walking Dead universe is coming to an end? Not according to the show’s writer, executive producer and steward, Scott Gimple. In a recent franchise retrospective panel at Mipcom to celebrate the show’s 15th anniversary, AMC Networks president Dan McDermott said of the show’s future:

“It’s very likely that we could see this group up here in 15 years. There are many more continents to visit. It’s about how [the characters] evolve over time. It’s really exciting to see how far we can go.”

Gimple added that taking the plucky “Walking Dead” characters to new lands like France and Spain, as in the Daryl Dixon spinoff starring Norman Reedusopens up a treasure chest of storytelling possibilities. “In many ways, [the locations] Tell us the story,” Gimple said.

Gimple compared the storytelling possibilities to the intricate canon of stories and characters assembled by DC and Marvel in the comic book realm.

“It was all one story. It went in all different directions,” Gimple said. “Even with characters who have done so many things, we can put them in different worlds where they face different challenges and have them evolve through those challenges.”

I don’t know what the future holds for the Walking Dead universe, but if they could tell a story that starts with the original timeline, but with new people in a new place, I think it could be interesting. Are there any stories you’d like to see explored?
