24 years have passed since then The mummy returns carried Dwayne Johnson on the big screen for the first time, but the actor still hasn’t forgotten the person who helped him find his balance… Brendan Fraser.
During a recent appearance on the New Heights podcast, Johnson explained how much Fraser’s kindness meant to him when he was just starting out in Hollywood.
“Brendan Fraser, though, I always want to mention. He was one of the biggest stars in the world. That was his franchise.
“I’m coming, I’ve never acted before, I’m excited. He could have easily said, ‘I don’t know if I want this wrestler.’ Instead, [he] he hugged me. I love that man for that and he helped me kick start my career.
When The mummy returns released in theaters in 2001, Johnson was best known as WWE’s “The Rock.” His role as the Scorpion King, a fearsome warrior resurrected to challenge Fraser’s heroic Rick O’Connell, was small but impactful.
The film’s success led to his first leading role The Scorpion King the following year, officially launching his Hollywood career.
From there, Johnson became one of the biggest movie stars on the planet, starring in massive franchises such as Fast and furious, Jumanjiand more. Yet despite all this success, he has never forgotten where it all began, with Fraser welcoming him onto the set of his film twenty years ago.
These days, Johnson is exploring new territory with more dramatic roles. He acts The destructive machinea gritty drama directed by Benny Safdiewhere he plays real MMA fighter Mark Kerr.
He is also preparing to work Martin Scorsese in the director’s next untitled film, playing a Hawaiian crime boss.
