Fans are preparing for the fifth and final season of the Netflix series Stranger things. The show had four strong seasons of storytelling and action, each of which reached this final resolution.
While the show’s creators, the Duffer brothers, have assured viewers that the story will unfold the way they always imagined, one star of the series has some nervous feelings about the reception of the finale.
Finn Wolfhardwho plays Mike Wheeler on the show, revealed in a new interview with Time magazine that he had a panic attack during the production of Stranger things season 4, given the show’s intense fandom, which has at times been “subconsciously terrifying” to handle. The actor was only 13 years old when Stranger things debuted and catapulted him to international fame.
“It’s just a symptom of what cinema can be, which is chaotic,” Wolfhard told the publication. “When you’re a child actor, you try to make things easy for people. You don’t know how to speak for yourself.
“You don’t know how to ask for a break… It was incredible and subconsciously terrifying to be 13 and suddenly everyone knows who you are.”
During season 4, Wolfhard’s co-stars, Caleb McLaughlin AND Gaten Matarazzo “She took him aside and reassured him that they felt the same pressure,” Time writes.
Whatever pressure existed for Wolfhard and the whole Stranger things the cast only stepped up as they entered production on the fifth and final season. The series finale is sure to be one of the most scrutinized episodes in TV history.
As fans of the shows like it Lost AND game of Thrones you know, an extremely controversial series finale can risk tainting a show’s entire legacy.
“I think everyone was pretty worried, honestly,” Wolfhard told Time magazine. “The way ‘Game of Thrones’ was torn to shreds in the last season makes us all think, ‘Let’s hope something like this doesn’t happen.’ But then we read the scripts. We knew it was something special.”
The creators of “Stranger Things”, Matt and Ross Duffer, said it Variety in an exclusive cover story they say they’ve been planning the show’s finale for several years and have always written about it, which will hopefully create a series finale that delivers.
“We’ve known more or less for years what the final scene would be – it wasn’t something we had trouble coming up with,” Matt said. “There were elements that had been discussed for weeks, but we had the core idea of the ending for a long time.”
I have so much faith in the Duffers’ ability to tell a good story, I have very little concern that they will end the show with the same heart and storytelling that made us love the show in its first four seasons.
Stranger Things 5 kicks off with vol. 1 (episodes 1-4) on November 26, episodes 5-7 on December 25 and the grand finale on December 31.
