The Duffer Brothers are preparing to complete the story of Hawkins, but they are not saying goodbye to the world of Stranger Things. In an interview with Variety, Matt and Ross Duffer confirmed that the fifth season will be the finale of the main story, followed by a spin-off that will be a completely new project with different characters and plot.

Matt Duffer explained, “We’re doing the Demogorgons, the Mind Flayer, Vecna, the Upside Down, the Hawkins, everything we wanted to do with these heroes. It’s a complete story. It’s over.” But at the same time, the creators are already actively developing a branch, and, according to them, it will not be a direct continuation of the events of the series.
“It’s going to be something completely different. It’s not like Star Wars, where the story just expands. We want to keep the spirit of the original (kids, adventure, sci-fi) but start with a clean slate,” Matt said. Ross Duffer added that the spin-off will resemble an anthology, with only the emotional and stylistic connection to the original maintained.

According to the brothers, creating a new story was a “refreshing” process for them: “You start with new characters, there are no ties. It’s inspiring.” At the same time, the Duffers will not be the executors of the project; They plan to participate in development and production, but will hand over leadership to another team and open new projects in collaboration with Paramount.
Netflix has already confirmed that it is collaborating on several ideas with the brothers, including the animated series Stranger Things. Stories from ’85 presented at the Annecy festival. The spin-off’s release date has not been announced yet, but the platform is confident of its success.
Meanwhile, brothers Matt and Ross Duffer are currently in active talks to create specials and TV series with an emphasis on blockbusters. Read here about what they want to shoot next.
