Christopher Nolan met with Tony Scott to direct MAN OF STEEL before Zack Snyder came on board

As you know, Christopher Nolan was a producer on the Warner Bros. film Superman Man of Steel and it was he who met the directors to undertake the project. There were about five directors that Nolan and the studio were looking at, and ultimately the job went to them Zack Snyderbut during a recent interview with Man of Steel writer David S. Goyerrevealed that one of the other directors Nolan met was up for the job Tony Scott (Top Gun, Man of Fire, Crimson Tide). In fact, in the end, after meeting all the directors, the choice fell on Scott or Snyder.

During the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Goyer explained:

“It was a very deliberative process. Chris met with, I want to say, about five directors and it came down to Zack and another director, and it seemed like Zack was the right call. I think Zack was the right call. It was really exciting,” the fact that Zack wanted to shoot that movie handheld, which I thought was a brilliant idea. What’s interesting about the Elseworlds version of what could have been is that Chris had already met Tony Scott, so there’s a Tony Scott Man version of Steel in some parallel universe. I think Tony Scott doesn’t get as much credit as he should be given, because he was just as phenomenal a director as his brother, and it’s a movie I would have liked to see.”

It would have been really interesting to see what Scott’s vision for Superman would have been! I’ve enjoyed the films that Tony Scott has made throughout his career and I bet he would have made a really great film. Man of Steel movie. But Snyder is Nolan and WB’s chosen person and in the end he made a fantastic film.

Furthermore Man of Steelthe director was also once attached to direct the superhero film Millarworld Nemesis.

Scott died in 2012 by suicide, apparently as a way to escape a painful death from inoperable cancer.
