Before making SE7EN, David Fincher was developing a film BLADE with David S. Goyer

David S. Goyer he wrote all three screenplays for the original Lama trilogy, which ended with his direction Lama: Trinity. The first director with whom you started working for the first film in the series was David Fincher. This was before Fincher went out and made Se7en and it was something he was excited about.

Goyer talked about it during an interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast saying:

“I developed an outline with Fincher before he made Se7en. I think he had made Alien 3 and was maybe developing Se7en. I developed a draft with him. I remember going to our producers’ office… There was this giant conference table. Fincher laid out 40 to 50 photography and art books with post-it notes inside them. He said, “This is the movie.”

Fincher had a grand vision for the film and continued to outline his vision for a particular scene over the course of two hours in one of their meetings. Goyer spoke of that meeting saying:

“[Fincher] took us on a two-hour tour around the table of the aesthetics of this scene, of that character. It was such a complete visual statement… I had never seen something like it before. Much of this thinking infused my further revisions.

Ultimately, Fincher stepped away from the project when he encountered some development issues and turned his focus and attention to Se7en. It would have been interesting to see Fincher’s vision of Blade come to life, but the film was directed by Stephen Norrington and the result was fantastic!
