Jeff Nichols shares his interesting and dark plan for his scrapped AQUAMAN movie

In 2014, writer and director Jeff Nichols (Mud, Midnight Special) launched a Aquaman movie that ultimately never got picked up, but sure would have been great! This information was initially revealed during the Sony email hack, and at the time, Jason Momoa he was still busy acting in the film at the time. Nicolas’ vision of the film would have been very different from what it was James Wan delivered. Nichols’ film would have been much darker and it sounds like it would have been much more badass.

During a recent interview with the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Nicolas shared details of his presentation saying:

“I still have scenes to go [Aquaman] in my head it would have been nice. They would have been very different from the movie that was made. It was never feasible… I liked the old Aquaman, like when he had a harpoon in his hand. He was a fallen king and his son was dead. He was in mourning.

“Obviously, from this little presentation, you can see that it would have sold hundreds of dollars worth of tickets! It’s fun to ramble on about that stuff, but we have a lot of those movies now. There are a lot of stories in the world. It’s okay to spend time telling some of them ‘other.”

I would have loved to see that version of Aquaman made, but yeah… Hollywood would never have made that movie because it was just too awesome for them. It’s a shame that these studio execs can’t see a big vision for something when it punches them in the face.

Nichols’ speech was inspired by Peter DavidThe epic ’90s series that reinvented Aquaman with long hair, a beard, and a badass harpoon hand. David talked about this previously:

“I decided that I had to radically change his appearance, which would be a good start. So I gave him long hair and I gave him a beard, and I developed the idea of losing his right hand and having it replaced with a harpoon. I thought it would make him seem a lot more dynamic. I mean, if old Aquaman walked into a room, you’d be like, “Hey Aquaman! What’s going on?” If the bearded guy with the long hair and the frowning look walks in and has a harpoon on his arm, you’ll say, “Um, yeah? What can I do to help you, sir? Don’t kill me.” I wanted that kind of gravitas in the way he looked, so that when this guy walked into a room you knew he was a hot shot. He was NOT someone you wanted to screw with.”

Yes, Jason Momoa sported the long hair and beard, but I like the old grieving fallen king angle of the story… and yes, the harpoon hand! What do you think of Nichols’ speech?
