HBO has pulled the plug on the controversial series The idol after one season. The series came from Euphoria Creator Sam Levison AND Abel Tesfayeaka The Weeknd, and starred Lily-Rose Depp. This cancellation is not a big surprise as the production of the first season did not go well due to the numerous re-shoots following the director’s departure. According to a report in Rolling Stone, production on this series had “gone wildly, disgustingly off the rails.” Sources say after a change of administration with Levinson taking over Amy Seimetz there was a “creepy” twist, creating a crazy work environment.
The idol is set against the backdrop of the Los Angeles music industry. “After a nervous breakdown derails Jocelyn’s (Depp) latest tour, she is determined to reclaim her rightful status as America’s biggest and sexiest pop star. Her passions are rekindled by Tedros (Tesfaye), a nightclub manager with a sordid past. Will her romantic awakening take her to glorious new heights or into the deepest, darkest depths of her own soul?
I have no idea how the series came about because I haven’t seen it. It just didn’t seem very interesting to me. Some cast members have mentioned the possibility of a second season during interviews, but the creators apparently didn’t go into the production process with a plan for another season.
HBO said in a statement: “The idol was one of HBO’s most provocative original programs and we are delighted with the strong response from audiences. After much thought and consideration, HBO, as well as the creators and producers, have decided not to move forward with a second season. We are grateful to the creators, cast and crew for their incredible work.”
The rest of the cast includes Susanna Son, Troye Sivan, Moses Sumney, Jane Adams, Dan Levi, Jennie Ruby Jane, Eli Roth, Rachel Sennot, Hari Nef, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Mike Dean, RamseyAND Hank Azaria.
