BLUE BEETLE takes in .4 million at the box office, but earns a B+ CinemaScore

A.D Blue Beetle wins the box office this weekend by knocking Barbie out of first place. The superhero film was expected to make $30 million dollars in its domestic opening weekend, and eventually landed around $25.4 million. So, it fell short, but it was this weekend’s box office winner, so that’s something. It also didn’t miss by much.

Blue Beetle it also earned a 92% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a B+ rating on CinemaScore, which is the standard rating for movies these days that most people seem to trust. That’s a higher rating than The Flash, which got a B. The film received solid positive buzz, which is good to see.

In case you are curious about the production budget for Blue Beetle, was around $104 million, so it actually has a good chance of turning a profit when all is said and done. But, as expected, the film won’t be a runaway success.

So, does this mean that the movie and the character will continue in James Gunn’s DCU? Only time will tell, but if the movie doesn’t lose money, chances are it will. It seems that WB and DC Studio have both thrown their full support for this character, so we may not have seen the last of Blue Beetle. Maybe the star of the movie, Xolo Maridueña (Cobra Kai), will actually play the character for the next 12 years as he wanted.

I haven’t had a chance to see the movie yet because I traveled to drop my daughter off at college. But I will try to see him sometime this week. If you’ve seen the movie, let us know what you think!

The story of the film centers on Jaime Reyes, the alter ego of Blue Beetle, a vigilante who has a beetle grafted onto his spine that grants him enormous powers and the ability to emit blue energy. Here is the synopsis:

Recent college grad Jaime Reyes returns home full of aspirations for his future, only to find home isn’t quite the way he left it. As he tries to find his purpose in the world, fate intervenes when Jaime unexpectedly finds himself in possession of an ancient relic of alien biotechnology: the Beetle. When the Scarab suddenly chooses Jaime as its symbiotic host, he is bestowed with incredible armor with extraordinary and unpredictable powers, forever changing his destiny as he becomes the superhero BLUE BEETLE.

Blue Beetle was directed by Angelo Manuel Soto (Charm City Kings) from a screenplay adapted from Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer (Miss Bala). The film is the protagonist Xolo Maridueña (Cobra Kai) as Reyes; Bruna Marquezine as Penny, the female lead and love interest; Belissa Escobedo as Jamie’s younger sister Milagros; as well as Harvey Guillen; AND Susan Sarandon as the villain Victoria Kord.
