THE TOXIC AVENGER remake’s visual effects and gore were created by special effects legend Phil Tippett’s studio

An interesting little detail was recently revealed regarding the upcoming Legendary The toxic avenger remake. The movie is making its big premiere at Fantastic Fest, and as they shared some details about the movie about X, the legend of special effects Phil Tippet revealed that his studio did all the visual effects and gore work on the film, which is pretty awesome!

The initial x from Fantastic Fest reads: ‘Let’s start with the headline grabbers. Opening Night: ‘THE TOXIC AVENGER.’ Peter Dinklage grab the broom. Jacopo Tremblay, Taylor Paige, Elijah WoodAND Kevin Bacon rule. Macon Blair directs. Legendary production. FF’s audience flips.”

“Okay, fine. Yes, these rules, but none of these are new information. And then, the clouds parted and the Mad God himself bestowed upon us the Good News… Phil Tippett’s study is behind the visual effects of the film.

Tippet, then quote-X’d that saying “Congratulations to the #TheToxicAvenger team. Proud of Tippett Studio’s visual effects and digital effects on film.”

So, they’re the ones who got to work on those crazy “guts” effects that got teased! There is no doubt that the film will be filled with all kinds of wild gore and gore, after all, the film is rated R for “Strong Violence and Gore”. Tippett’s VFX team must have had a fun experience working on this film!

Tippett has had a really great career and has worked on projects like Star Wars, Jurassic Park, RoboCop, Willow, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Howard the Duck, House II, Starship Troopers, The Haunting, Poker Face, Mad Godand more.

Peter Dinklage he plays Winston Gooze in the film and speaking earlier, he described the film as “over the top and crazy”. Sound editor Casey Genton even previously offered a small preview of what’s to come, saying:

“It’s a really fun movie. Macon Blair, the director, I think he did a really good job. Everyone was a dream in the movie. I’m so surprised – for me personally, I hadn’t seen the original ‘Toxic Avenger’ until I made this movie. And it’s a great cult classic, and I know people are really excited about it. When they tried it out, fans of the film were over the moon with the film. […] It’s nice out there. I think it’s a different crack. They’re giving the fans what they want, for sure. There’s no shortage of — I know everyone is referencing the kid’s head getting run over and stuff like that. I think there was one iteration of the film that didn’t get enough, so they did a lot – I don’t want to spoil it. But that’s it, it’s been dubbed the ‘guts’ scene, and it’s probably the best way to match that ‘heads being run over’ energy everyone is looking for. So it’s in line with the fan base and I think it’s fun.”

The original film told the story of a bullied janitor who becomes a mutant superhero after falling into a vat of toxic waste and transforms into a radioactive hero. The synopsis for the new film reads:

While the original film (which premiered in 1984 – almost 40 years ago!) followed the fate of Melvin Ferd Junko III (Mitch Cohen), who goes from zero to toxic hero in a bullying case gone wrong , the contemporary version of Blair follows a hideous deformed creature of superhuman size and strength all its own.

Peter Dinklage plays downtrodden janitor Winston Gooze who, after falling into a vat of toxic waste, becomes none other than The Toxic Avenger. This timely retelling lives up to his eyes in environmental themes as Winston battles the evil forces of greed and corruption to save his son, his friends and his community.

The toxic avenger will premiere at Fantastic Fest on September 21, 2023.
