We first saw the Spider-Man 2099 character in the end credits scene of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Versethe first film in the animated franchise trilogy, in which the character, also known as Miguel O’Hara (voiced by Oscar Isaac), is seen talking to Lyla, who is telling Miguel that she is about to be the first person, or the last, to make a self-contained multiverse jump.
Miguel returned Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, where he was the film’s big villain. In the story, Miguel/Spider-Man 2099 headed the Spider Society, a collection of Spider-Variants from various Earths in the greater multiverse tasked with maintaining the stability of the universes by ensuring that canonical events across the multiverse unfold. as expected, like Uncle Ben and the dying Captain Stacy.
For Miles Morales, his canon event is his father who dies shortly after being promoted to police captain. With this knowledge combined with his father’s looming promotion Jefferson Davis, Miles goes against the commands of the Spider Society and attempts to return to his universe to rescue his father. In the process, Miles destroys Miguel’s digital suit, short-circuiting it with his bioelectric powers.
But that doesn’t spell the end for Miguel, not so easily. An Easter egg has been spotted in Miguel’s lab, Spider-Man 2099’s white suit is hidden in the background of one shot. While his blue and red suit is his most iconic appearance, Spider-Man 2099’s white appearance is actually a more advanced version of his original suit.
This suit was confirmed as a deliberate Easter egg in the digital version of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, as character designer Kris Anka specifically described the hidden suit as Spider-Man 2099’s “second white suit”. That means we definitely haven’t seen the last of Miguel O’Hara’s Spider-Man 2099. How do you hope to see Miles defeat this foe in Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse?
