As you know, Disney Studios recently had a string of box office disappointments in 2023 and because of that, they’re rethinking their strategy… and the genius idea they came up with was, “Hey! Why don’t we just start making better quality movies!?” I wonder why they didn’t think of that sooner!
Disney CEO Bob Iger recently explained on a call to investors that they will also reduce the number of films being released:
“We are focused on improving the quality of our films and a better economy, not only by reducing the number of titles we release, but also the cost per title. We are maximizing the full impact of our titles by embracing the multiple distribution windows available to us , enabling consumers to access our content in more ways.”
The big question is, will they really start developing higher quality films? Or will they simply continue to develop mediocre projects? One thing’s for sure, they won’t stop developing live-action remakes of their animated classics!
This isn’t the first time Iger has commented on this. During a previous interview, you talked about the wonder AND Star Wars franchises that say, “You pull back not only as a focus, but also as part of our cost-containment initiative. Spend less on what we do and earn less.” She went on to say:
“Marvel is a great example of that. They hadn’t been in the TV business on any significant level, and they not only ramped up the production of movies, but ended up making a slew of TV series. Frankly, it diluted the focus and the Attention .”
Look, I hope Disney gets its act together and starts making great movies again. For a company that used to make classic movies, they really don’t anymore. They keep pumping pretty much the same. They have to go back to making original stories and making new classic movies!
I’m a huge die hard Disney fan! But Disney has lost its magic and I hope they can find it again.
