The 1987 horror comedy Street trash is getting the reboot treatment thanks to Cineverse, which has acquired all the North American rights to the cult film. The original film told the story of a liquor store owner in New York City who sells booze to the homeless, however, he doesn’t know that bottles of alcohol are actually a toxic drink.
As you can imagine, tainted alcohol has a debilitating effect on the vagrants who infest Brooklyn’s streets and garbage dumps. The film is directed by Ryan Kruger (Fried Barry) and will set the new film in Cape Town, South Africa. He said in a statement:
“Our reimagining of Street Trash takes place in Cape Town, South Africa, where the growing gap between rich and poor has changed the world as we know it. I was a huge fan of the original ‘Street Trash’ when I was a kid, and I couldn’t be more excited to introduce a whole new generation to the melted gonzo goodness that made the original such a classic.
The film’s official description reads, “Street Trash follows a group of homeless misfits as they struggle for survival when they uncover a plot to exterminate every homeless person in the city.” It is explained that “the reboot stays true to the original storyline – which chronicles the disgusting decay of New York City drifters after ingesting bottles of toxic alcohol – but exposes blood to create a metaphor for something much bigger.”
Kruger went on to say:
“While our reimagining features new and exciting plot elements that give the film many bizarre twists, the core of the film lies in our diverse and unique cast of characters. As a director, I am very much character driven and can’t wait to see our strange and hilarious ensemble on screen together as they navigate the hostile streets of Cape Town. Our version of ‘Street Trash’ will be gritty, hilarious, filled with vibrant characters and multi-colored explosions of gooey grandeur.
The director of the original Street trash film Jim Muro and original producer Roy Frumkes are the executive producers of the film along with Bad Dragon and Vinegar Syndrome.
