Roland Emmerich (independence Day) collaborated with Jerome Wuon which he worked World of Warcraft for a new epic sci-fi space opera franchise titled Space nation. The franchise was developed as a TV series, a video game, and a series of animated shorts.

Space nation will be launched as a “massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG), where players take on the role of ship captains, embarking on an epic journey to unravel the mysteries of the Telikos Cluster and immerse themselves in the ongoing grand space opera.”

The story is set in a universe inhabited by alien species and led by three main factions with distinct ideologies and goals.

The online game’s alpha test will launch in August 2023 and is slated for a commercial launch in Q2 2024. That game will be followed by the TV series, animated shorts, and spin-off games.

Emmerich and Wu are also working on the project with Tony Tangwho worked on the online game WarframesAND Mark Webberproducer of Emmerich’s 1999 science fiction film The thirteenth floor. The project was launched with a budget of $50 million.

Emmerich said in a statement, “Hollywood’s growing interest in video games reflects a wider recognition of the game’s popularity and storytelling potential. The expansive universe we are building in Space Nation is a tremendous opportunity to captivate audiences wherever they consume entertainment with innovative new forms of storytelling.”

Jerome Wu, CEO and co-creator of Space nation he added: “The entertainment landscape is evolving rapidly and we see an incredible opportunity to redefine the boundaries. Through our collaborative efforts, we aim to transform the way content is consumed, shared and experienced.”

There is still a lot we don’t know Space nation, but it looks like it could be a fun and interesting project. It will be interesting to see if it actually ends up being fully realized.
