All 2023 Ariel Awards Nominees Revealed; The Best of Mexican Cinema (Special)

Excitement is in the air as the Mexican Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMACC) reveals the incredible nominated for the 65th Ariel Awards. This ceremony, which celebrates the best of Mexican cinema, will take place on September 9 at the Teatro Degollado, in the vibrant city of Guadalajara, Jalisco. But that is not all! This year the event will take place outside Mexico City for the first time, adding a fresh touch to the prestigious gala.

In the Best Film category, we find an impressive selection of titles that made history at the 20th Morelia International Film Festival (FICM). Outstanding among them is the outstanding film “Huesera” (2022), which won the Audience Award for Mexican Fiction Feature Film at the said festival.

Now, at the 2023 Ariel Awards, she’s earned a staggering 17 nominations, including Best Film, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, First Feature and many others. Closely follows with 16 nominations “El norte sobre el vacío” (2022), directed by Alejandra Márquez Abella, which was awarded Best Mexican Fiction Feature Film and Best Mexican Fiction Feature Film Screenplay at the FICM.

Other notable films that were also part of the programming of the 20th FICM are in the list of candidates. “Bard, False Chronicle of a Few Truths” (2022) stands out with 12 nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Cinematography, Best Editing, among other exciting categories.

Short films leave their mark on Mexican cinema

Besides feature films, short films have also made their mark on the Mexican film industry. The documentary “La evaluación”, directed by Diego Enrique Osorno, obtained a deserved nomination in its category, as well as “Cartas a distancia” (2021), directed by Juan Carlos Rulfo, which was part of the Official Selection of the 19th FICM and it was nominated for Best Documentary and Best Original Score.

One of the biggest names in the Best Actor category is Gerardo Trejoluna, who took home the Ojito for Best Actor in a Mexican Fiction Feature Film at the 20th FICM. Now, his performance in ‘The North Over the Void’ has catapulted him to a new Best Actor nomination at the 2023 Ariel Awards.

Andrés Kaiser’s “Teorema de tiempo” (2022), which received the Special Mention for Mexican Feature Documentary at the 20th FICM, will instead face stiff competition in the Best Feature Documentary category. Meanwhile, “Los cuervos” (2022), directed by Héctor Dávila Cabrera and winner of the Special Mention for Mexican Animated Short Film, was recognized as one of nominated in the Animated Shorts category at the 2023 Ariel Awards.
