Less than a month until the release of the highly anticipated animated sequel, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verseso that means we’re getting new trailers, clips and interviews with the cast and directors, giving us sneak peeks at what we’re about to see.
A burning question was addressed by the film’s co-director, Kemp Powers, regarding the film’s possible ties to the big MCU. In a recent interview with sfx extensionPowers clarified:
“The world of Miles Morales and the Spider-Verse, it’s not related to the Marvel Cinematic Universe or anything like that. But this is a Lord and Miller movie. We like to have a little fun, we like to be a little meta and acknowledge the world we’re creating these stories in. That’s the best way to put it.”
The acknowledgment he’s referring to occurs in the film’s second trailer, where Spider-Man 2099 told Miles he didn’t even want to start with “Doctor Strange and that little nerd on Earth-199999.”
While Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness labeled the MCU as Earth-616, Earth-199999 is the comic book-accurate label for the live-action franchise. This led many to believe that Spider-Man 2099 was directly referencing the events of 2021 Spider-Man: There’s no way back homethat he saw Tom HollandPeter Parker breaks the Multiverse in an attempt to hide his identity.
This Doctor Strange namedrop is similar to the one from 2004 Spider man 2in which the Sorcerer Supreme was mentioned in a conversation with J. Jonah Jameson. Spider man 2The teasing of came to nothing, as it was merely a fun nod to Marvel Comics, which is what On the other side of the RagnoverseEven the Doctor Strange line could be equivalent.
Powers added:
“This isn’t something we’ve done anything in partnership with Marvel. The Miles universe, trust me, there’s a lot to work with. That gag is one of many, and my favorite gag is the one that the people don’t know yet. But I think when they see it, they’ll be quite amazed. It’s a serious film, but it’s also a film with a lot of fun.”
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse will hit theaters June 2. Are you getting excited about this?
