Actress Elle Fanning (The Great, Maleficent, The Neon Demon, Super 8) recently offered some fascinating but daunting insight into how some of Hollywood’s major studios are casting their big movie franchises. During a recent interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Fanning revealed that he didn’t land a role in an unnamed franchise film because his Instagram following count wasn’t large enough for the studio’s liking.
The actress explained, “I didn’t get a part once for something big because — it may not have been just that reason, but this was the feedback I heard — it was because I didn’t have enough Instagram followers at the time. Fanning currently stands at 6.2 million followers.
Fanning added, “It’s something I don’t really believe in, for not getting a part.” He goes on to say that he’s not under pressure to join these big movie franchises saying, “I don’t feel like that. I do not. It does something for people, you know, but you don’t even know if it’s going to work sometimes, which is also scary.
I just have to say that it is absolutely ridiculous that some studios are casting actors based on their social media follower counts instead of their talents and what they can bring to the character they are auditioning for. Fanning is an incredibly talented actress, and the fact that she was dropped for a role because of this is just insane to me!
I wonder how many other talented actors are ignored because of their social media numbers. This is obviously something the Studios are doing and now there’s one more thing on the Hollywood I hate list. Cast for talent, not social media followers!
