The film is described as a “New Republic vs. Imperial Remnant” story, and will be a major cinematic event that is sure to blow fans away. During a recent interview with Filoni, he talks about his ideas about how the events of a movie are different from those of a TV show. The film could be the culmination of the whole thing, and about it, he told Empire:

“Culmination is an interesting word. The way I see it, there are [small] stories, and then there’s also the big story of the day. A new hope, [The Empire Strikes Back], and Return of the Jedi tell the important parts of the tale that really define the story of the period. There are all kinds of underlying sub-stories. We built all these little stories.”

The director then went on to discuss the theatrical experience, saying that a film like the one he’s making will contain an event that will define the era:

“To me, a theater experience has to have a big idea: a monumental moment in the time period that changes what’s happening. What Tony [Gilroy] did [in Andor] and what we did inside [Star Wars] Rebels, everything then changes when Luke blows up the Death Star. You’re looking for those moments that define an era, and that’s really what movies should be about, whether it’s characters coming together or a defining moment.”

So, that’s exciting! Filoni’s film is set during the New Republic between the fall of the Galactic Empire and the rise of the First Order. With the Ahsoka series on the way and Grand Admiral Thrawn making his live-action debut, this could affect the film. When asked about the ideas, Filoni said:

“I have ideas, of course. I won’t tell you what they are! There are little things along the way that I’ve built on different mediums, all in preparation for the things that come next.”

Speaking previously of the film, Favreau discussed drawing inspiration from the different sources they draw from for the film, saying, “When I was younger, we didn’t have movies, but there were comics, novels, things that are wrapped up in [expanded universe] or Legends. Clearly, there are decisions that need to be made to bring it all together, but for us, I think one thing we can agree on is that the characters – as special as they are – the story has to drive who the characters are. “

He continued, “We joke that it’s like we’re playing with action figures, like, ‘What’s in the box? Let’s play with what’s in the box!’ And that’s what you do when you’re playing and you’re a kid.”

As for which action figures to play with, Favreau explained, “As we get deeper and deeper into this, you start having to really map things out and figure out what that story is, and then have those characters realize what their cycle is.” of growth and what is their mythic hero’s journey. These things have to fit together well. Otherwise, it won’t look Star Wars.”

Favreau went on to say, “That was always George’s basis. He is a student of Joseph Campbell. How does the hero’s journey fit into the narrative? And so as we have more and more characters lined up, you have to figure out how those characters are evolving and if it ultimately feels like a Star Wars history.”

Stay tuned for more details as the creative team continues to talk about what they’re working on.
