MAURY THE MISERABLE VAMPIRE is getting an animated film adaptation

The children’s book written by Jeff Roland, Maury the miserable vampire, was acquired by producer/director Josh Ruben and his Nocturnal Kid, a new genre label he launched. Ruben is behind the horror comedies It scares me AND Werewolves insideboth great movies!

The plan is to adapt Maury the Miserable Vampire as an animated film. The book includes Easter eggs and a hidden puzzle, and the story offers positive messages for children about friendship and acceptance.

In the story, “Maury the miserable vampire lived in a cold, dark castle and he liked it that way. He never laughed, never smiled and never came out. When his only friend, Barry the Bat, suddenly disappears, Maury must muster the courage to set out on the world for the first time to find him. Along the way, Maury meets friendly and funny monsters from all over the world and learns about other cultures, teamwork and most importantly, the value of friendship.

Roland said in a statement, “I’m a huge fan of Josh’s work and know he has the exact mindset needed to not only handle a story involving classic monsters and comedy, but also the emotional elements of the story. He understands it completely. I am beyond excited to be working on the script with him and the prospect of being able to share a broader view of Maury’s world with his fans. You might find out why Maury is so unhappy.

Ruben added, “’Maury’ is a children’s story about friendship and respect, and the protagonist is kind of an idiot who takes his only friend for granted. This story has a formidable emotional core, which is that, even in the worst case scenario, all we want is to be loved and accepted. Telling this story through an animated horror gateway with werewolves, bats and all things that come across in the night got me excited to produce Jeff Roland’s genre tale under my new banner.

It sounds like a wonderful story that is sure to make a fun animated film that kids will enjoy.
