If a sequel to Coen Bros.’ The Big Lebowski never been made, Jeff Bridges he’d be open to returning to play The Dude… on one condition. Joel AND Ethan Coen should be involved.

During a recent interview with People, Bridges reflected on how the cult crime comedy celebrated its 25th anniversary this year and revealed he’s open to reprising his role, saying:
“Oh God! If the brothers were involved, I definitely would. The brothers, they’re mysterious and full of surprises. You don’t know what they’re going to do, so since they’re amazing, I don’t know I think they’ll do a sequel. But like I said, they’re amazing , so maybe they’ll surprise me and make a sequel.”
If a sequel was ever made, the Coen brothers should have been involved. There’s really no point in making a sequel without them. But does the movie really need a sequel?! No. The film is perfect as it is and there is no reason to make a sequel. But, as Bridges said, perhaps the Coen Bros. will surprise fans.
The actor went on to talk about the impact The Big Lebowski had, saying he “can’t believe” it’s been more than two decades since the movie hit theaters. He explained:
“Movies are kind of like your kids: they put everything into perspective. They let you know how fast it’s going, because before you know it you have a six month old, and then you turn around and she’s 16. I movies are a bit like that.”
He went on to talk about how proud he is of the movie, saying, “That movie, I’m so proud to be a part of it. How cool. When you hear what Lebowski was 25 years ago, I’m like, ‘Come on, man. I can’t believe it.” It seems like maybe five years ago, but 25? I can’t believe it.”
Now, Bridges reprized his role in a Super Bowl commercial that aired a few years ago, and that was hilarious to watch.
The Big Lebowski tells the story of Jeff Lebowski, also known as “The Dude”, who becomes embroiled in a case of mistaken identity when two thugs break into his home and demand that he pay off the debts of another Jeff Lebowski, who is a millionaire. From there, The Dude, along with his friends Walter and Donny, become entangled in a twisted plot involving kidnappings, extortion and nihilists.
The film has a unique blend of comedy, drama, and surrealism along with a whimsical, dreamlike quality that makes it so much fun to watch. The characters that fill it are quirky and offbeat, and their interactions with one another are hilarious.
It tells a complex, multi-layered story that rewards fans with repeat viewing. Seriously, it seems like every time I look at it it captures something new.
