I love that Spider-Punk is making his big screen debut Spider-Man: Through the Spider-Verse. I immediately liked this punk version of the character when he was first introduced, and now we will see him in action on the big screen!

Daniel Kaluya (Get out, Black Panther, no) was cast as Spider-Punk aka Hobie Brown, a plaid-crested British variant from Camden, which is also where the actor is from! So it’s perfect! During a recent interview with Empire, Kaluuya opened up about being cast in the role, saying:
“I was gassed. I turned to Lord and Miller and Kemp and said, “Thanks for letting me be a part of it, because it’s cool as hell.” I’m an entry into the Spider-Verse with an evil character that sounds exactly like me, where I’m from. Come on! Go to the younger people in your family and flex, ‘I’m getting along, but don’t forget!’”
As you can imagine, this was a nice opportunity for the actor to channel himself into a Spidey character, since he and the character are from the same place. He went on to say:
“I was born and raised in Camden, and this character is from Camden, which is very much associated with the punk movement, so I think they wanted to lean into what they have for free with me. They were like, ‘How do they talk?’ and I said: ‘Like me!’ I think he gives it that authenticity, like me saying, ‘Man like Pav! [Indian Spider-Man Pavitr Prabhakar] Great steppe!’ I felt really respected.”
It’s good to know that the time spent making this movie was a great experience for him! I’m excited to see what he brings to the character. Spider-Punk definitely looks great in the movie!
