I’m a big fan of the films that make up the Back to the Future trilogy. I grew up with those movies and I still remember seeing them for the first time in the cinema. That first movie in particular blew my mind as a kid!

This franchise holds a special place in my heart, and I hope Hollywood never tries to do it again. But it’s also hard not to be curious about what a sequel would be like after all these years. I don’t think we need another one Back to the Future sequel, but then I saw this fan-made trailer, and it sure got me excited!
The fan trailer comes from Smasher who shared the following information:
Many fans thought a fourth ‘Back to the Future’ movie might be in the works when one of the lead actors from the originals, Christopher Lloyd who played Dr. Emmett “Doc” Brown, posted references to the movies on social media. Michael J. Fox posted on Instagram the next day to say, “Doc and I are up to something heavy…”
It turned out they were mocking a Back to the Future themed store. When a fan replied to his tweet saying. “Please please don’t say you’re redoing BTTF,” Lloyd wrote, “We’re not.”
Fans have always wondered why there wouldn’t be another installment when all the other beloved franchises seem to keep coming back to the well. In an interview, series co-writer Bob Gale explained why the fourth film would never be released: they had already told a complete story with the original trilogy.
Michael J. Fox is obviously a big part of it. But you could just rephrase that, right? There were those fake deep people that Tom Holland and Robert Downey Jr seemed to like.
But the point remains. The film will always be compared to the original and will never live on its own. This is just a fact. As a result, it will always be considered inferior or, hypothetical though unlikely, reduce the legacy of the original.
There are so few franchises or characters that haven’t been watered down over the past 30 years that it’s refreshing to have a franchise like Back to the Future that can only remain those three beloved films. Plus, if you really want more of Back to the Future, it’s out there. There are comics, video games, even a bloody Broadway musical. Many other ways the story continued without a movie. Those things feel like the best of both worlds: more of that thing you love without actually affecting the original.
A short film titled Doc Brown Saves the World was released, officially created by Universal Studios and starring Christopher Lloyd reprising his role of Dr. Emmett Brown and set entirely in his secret laboratory outside of Hill Valley. The short film is set thirty years after the trilogy. Doc Brown Saves the World is the only official film sequel to the trilogy ever created.
