The 1999 action fantasy comedy Mysterious men was a box office flop that has earned a cult classic quite a bit of an audience over the past 24 years. The film boasted a crazy cast including Ben Stiller, Janeane Garofalo, Paul Rubens, Hank Azaria, William H. Macy, Greg Kinnear, Geoffrey Rushand more, but the story was pretty cheesy and we still didn’t have legitimate superhero movies for them to play out in a fun way.

But now he can be watched more benevolently, further away from the sting of box office loss, and a film star, Kel Mitchellalso of Good burger fame, wants to come back to do a sequel and has ideas.

In a recent appearance at Connecticut’s 90s Con, Mitchell told ComicBook:

“Shout at Mysterious men. Thanks to Ben Stiller, Hank Azaria, Janeane Garofalo. Such a beautiful film.”

He said fans have asked him over the years for a sequel, and he said he’d love to do it:

“I want it. I asked Hank Azaria. I have a fun idea for that too. We’ll talk to Ben about it.”

When asked to reveal his mysterious idea for the Mysterious men sequel, Mitchell teased:

“Let’s just say ‘origin story.’ You know, we were the first superhero team before The Avengers and all of those [superhero movies] started doing it”.

However, Azaria recently told CB that he doesn’t think about Mysterious men 2 could ever happen, saying:

“We’ve already tried that [and] we failed quite miserably, really. We have a cult following, but the box office didn’t agree at the time. Usually, Hollywood doesn’t [give you] a second bite of that apple, right?”

Surprisingly, Stiller, who reprized his iconic role of Derek Zoolander in 2016 Zoolander 2and faced an unfortunate box office slump, also said Comic book it’s “all for” returning to Champion City.

“I had fun doing it. Yeah, it would’ve been a blast. It was a really, really fun cast. And there’s still some anger and fury inside of me somewhere, I think.”

I mean, I don’t know if this is a highly sought-after project, and I know it would be a hard sell for the studio. But I love this cast and I think it would be fun to see them reunite.

What do you think? Would you watch a Mysterious men 2? Mysterious men is currently streaming on Peacock.
