During a recent interview with Empire, Marshall offers some details about the new song, which is said to take place during a pivotal moment in history. The director reveals:
“It’s about his experiences the moment he hits the ground. We needed to create a number that could work almost like a montage, so that we could walk her through that experience: coming to dry land, what it’s like to put on shoes, have legs. Anyone who has a different experience, it’s wonderful and scary at the same time.
It will be interesting to hear the song and see how it fits the tone and style of the rest of the original music, created by the Broadway legends Alan Menken and the late, great Howard Ashmann.
When it comes to the casting of Halle Bailey as the film’s lead, Marshall said, “There was an innocence and a purity [Halle] besides having fire. It was this strange combination. And, of course, this magnificent voice.
She definitely has a beautiful voice and I have no doubt that she will give a wonderful interpretation of Ariel.
The beloved story of Ariel, a beautiful and vivacious young mermaid with a thirst for adventure. The youngest of King Triton’s daughters and the most rebellious, Ariel longs to know more about the world beyond the sea, and while she visits the surface, she falls in love with the handsome Prince Eric. While mermaids are forbidden from interacting with humans, Ariel must follow her heart. She makes a deal with the wicked sea witch, Ursula, that gives her the chance to experience life on land, but in the end she jeopardizes her life and her father’s crown.
The film also stars Jonah Hauer-Kingas Prince Eric, Melissa McCarthy like Ursula, Daveed Diggs (Hamilton, Snowpiercer) as Sebastian’s voice; Jacopo Tremblay (Luca) as the voice of Flounder; Awkwafina (Raya and the last dragon) as Scuttle’s voice; Malik art (Homeland) as Sir Grimsby; Name Dumezweni (Mary Poppins Returns) as Queen Selina; AND Javier Bardem (It’s no country for old men) as King Triton.
The little Mermaid will hit theaters on May 26, 2023.
