“Sweeney Todd” Starring Josh Groban and Annaleigh Ashford Grosses .5M, Fills Every Available Seat – Broadway Box Office

The revival of Sweeney Todd: Fleet Street’s demonic barber, starring Josh Groban and Annaleigh Ashford in previews at the Lunt-Fontanne, is firmly in Broadway’s $1 million club, taking in a whopping $1,526,254 for the week ending March 5. And only for six shows.

The Stephen Sondheim-Hugh Wheeler musical filled every seat at the Lunt-Fontanne Theater, with a solid average ticket price of $169.81, down slightly from the previous week. The premiere is on March 26.

SweeneyBroadway’s weekly earnings contributed well to Broadway’s total this week, with the 24 shows earning $25,163,054, fairly stable from the previous week. The same applies to the total number of visitors of 202,944.

A few other newcomers to the Broadway stage also did well, some more than others:

  • A dollhouse Jessica Chastain earned $742,696 and occupied 93% of the seats at the Hudson; premieres on March 9;
  • march, starring Ben Platt and Micaela Diamond, had a 95% occupancy rate at The Jacobs and earned $914,510 for 7 previews; Opening is March 16;
  • Dance by Bob Fosse began previewing at Music Box and grossed $331,757 for four previews, at 88% capacity; Opening March 19;
  • 89% occupancy at the Imperial, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s new musical Evil Cinderella grossed $568,165 for seven previews, down sharply from $116,657 from the previous week; The show’s average ticket price was also down, from $75 last week to $65 last week. Premiere is on March 23.

Funny girl was back in full force, earning $1,807,392, up $873,665 from the previous week when star Lea Michele was on a pre-planned vacation. The skim of the opera was SRO as usual, raising $2,542,427 as the April 16 closing date approached.

For the season to date, Broadway has grossed $1,212,850,921 with total admissions of 9,365,914, holding steady at an 88% load factor.
