Los Angeles Daily Covid Cases Up Nearly 300% In The Last Month, In First 3,000 Since Mid-February; Could Signal Sixth Wave

The number of new daily Covid infections in Los Angeles County rose nearly 300% last month and nearly 25% in the last week alone. Today they surpassed 3,000 for the first time since mid-February. While the daily number of cases was 1,060 in Los Angeles a month ago, this increase did not cause a significant increase in local hospitalization and mortality.

County public health director Barbara Ferrer said she hopes that with just a small increase in hospitalizations given the four-week increase in cases, Los Angeles can prevent a wave of hospitalizations and deaths like it did last winter’s Omicron wave.

Asked whether the current leap in daily life could be considered the “sixth wave” of a pandemic in the country, Ferrer said, “I feel comfortable describing it as a wave.” However, he added that if this is a wave, it is different from the others so far.

“All of our waves saw an increase in hospitalization and death rates over the course of four weeks, and we saw none,” said the director of public health. “I don’t think we have enough data. … This, of course, is growth. მაქვს I hope we don’t see exponential growth [in cases]”

He said Angelenos should “keep our masks on for a little bit longer than they did a few weeks ago.”

Ferrer continued: “We think it will make a difference. We also urge people to get wax and become stronger.”

“This is no time to stop thinking about cases,” Ferrer replied, to a suggestion that the public might stop thinking about big cases because of the lack of hospitalization.

In the Northeast, it recorded an increase in hospitalizations and a rapid increase in the most recent Omicron sub-variant. The number of hospitalized patients in New York who saw BA.2.12.1 weeks before LA was three times as much as last month.

“We don’t know enough about this new version of BA.2.12.1,” Ferrer said. “So let’s continue to be careful. Let’s continue to prepare based on what we’ve learned and what we’ve seen.”
