He is developing the show with WildBrain and will target a family audience. It was previously revealed that the series will be set in contemporary times, “following the adventures of a reimagined Green Hornet and Kato – now the adult son of the original Green Hornet and daughter of the original Kato – as they team up to fight crime in the City of the century. It will also feature the Green Hornet’s high-tech car, Black Beauty.
On a recent episode of Smith’s Fatman Beyond podcast, Smith shared some insight into what’s been going on with the series and raves about the animation, saying it’s “phenomenal” and that it’s “like that Pixar Sh*t.” He said:
“I don’t know if we can say who we’re working for, but, the production company, they announced it a long time ago. We’ve been working with the folks at WildBrain putting together 10 episodes of a Green Hornet children’s cartoon. This is what that Marc and I worked on. It’s fun! The animation is phenomenal. It’s like that Pixar stuff. It’s like they took a 2D drawing and enlarged it. We worked on it. We can’t say who it’s potentially for. But, once we deliver our scripts at the end of March, or what? Then, we’ll know if the people who paid for the scripts will want to go ahead with the show.”
Previously discussing the animation style of the series, Smith likened it to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse said:
“But it’s so wonderful, and it’s kid-friendly. Like it’s a family show. So it’s for 8-12 or a family group or something. And it’s very inspired by Into the Spider-Verse, very much. Deeply And actually, like we’re not doing a soundtrack, we’re jumping the needle in terms of a soundtrack. So it’s not going to be like, ‘Oh, there’s that Green Hornet soundtrack.’ We’re going to take music, current music, it kind of gives it a certain trendy edge, but it’s also very… yeah, it takes a lot of cues from Into the Spider-Verse and the look of it isn’t… As you look at it, you’d say, ‘Oh, I can see it there too.’ Yes. I love that movie.”
It will be interesting to see how it pans out if it actually gets made.
The Green Hornet originated as a radio series created by George W. Trendle in the 1930s, telling the story of Britt Reid, the wealthy owner and publisher of the fictitious newspaper The Daily Sentinel. By day, Reid oversees his newspaper’s reporting on crime and injustice, but by night she puts on her green mask and ventures across the city with her partner Kato to fight criminals and villains head-on.
