On My Screen: Banshees Of Inisherin star Kerry Condon shares her top career choices, Desert Island movies and what makes her cry

When Kerry Condon heard her Oscar nomination in the early hours of the morning in LA, she sat around the TV with a group that included her. Banshees by Inisherin Opponent Colin Farrell. “I remember thinking, ‘Oh Jesus, wait a minute. What if one of us is down?” said Condon. Fortunately, none of the actors got stuck in the rain. Near Banshees was an opportunity for the actress to reconnect with writer-director Martin McDonagh in his plays and films Three billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri she has already played a leading role. The Banshees Siobhán’s character, Condon lets us showcase her prowess – from a scene in which she gently ditches the smitten but pursued young Dominic (Barry Keoghan) to Brendan Gleeson’s sulky Colm (and men in general): ‘You, you are all fucking boring! ” Here, Condon reflects on her career so far and some of her on-screen favorites.

My first film lesson

It’s a good one. I learned it and was told so. You must be willing to deceive yourself. You really don’t need to be ashamed of being a good actress. You have to grow up and then you can push it back. But you have to have balls to grow up because you might look like a jerk but if you don’t grow up you’re holding back. Nick Nolte told me a story about an acting class he took with Marlon Brando. Marlon Brando didn’t say anything and just sat there in that chair and then slowly started doing his makeup and changed his outfit and basically made a complete fool of himself with the makeup and the clothes and that was the lesson in the end: when it was all over and he looked mad, he said, “That’s the lesson to learn. Don’t be afraid to make a fool of yourself and look like a complete idiot.”

The best advice I have ever received

Keep your expenses low. Because listen, I can be here all day giving you creative advice, but at the end of the day when you do a TV show and you spend your money on a big car that costs you $3,000 a month and then you think you’re living the dream in this great big house because you want to pretend you made it, it’s great. But the job ends and then you are unemployed. And how will you pay for this life you have? And this is a mistake that so many people make. They just think they’re going to make that money their whole life, and you’re not going to make that money your whole life. There comes a time when you won’t make any money at all. Keep your expenses low and it also frees you up, then you are more free artistically because it is not the idea, “I have to get a job because I have to pay for it.” You can sit back a little more and ask, “Do I want to do this job?”

The part I always wanted

I don’t have a role I want to play in the future or anything. I do not believe. I just go with what’s in front of me and when I feel like doing it. I never dream of a role I would like to play or anything like that. But I suppose all the parts that I want, the parts that I really liked, that I wanted, I have. [McDonagh’s play] Inishmore’s lieutenant would have been a role I really wanted, and then the role in it [television series] Happiness was another one I really, really wish I had.

The most fun I’ve had on set

Sometimes I get annoyed when people are having too much fun. I say, ‘It’s a deal, folks. It’s not fun and games.” You know, I’m pretty serious. I’m always ready and I don’t waste money or waste. So I can’t say that I’m having a lot of fun right now, but let me think. I mean I would say probably Happiness, again. Because when I wasn’t on set, I was driving at a race track and it was a lot of fun. To teach racehorses to ride on a racetrack, for me this feeling was so great. I also don’t want to give the impression that the acting is so great and we laugh so much all the time. It’s not, it’s really lonely. You’re having a good time and then you’re in a hotel room in the middle of nowhere in New Mexico and you’re alone. No one talks about it because everyone wants to think you’re sitting at the bar with Brad Pitt every night having a good time. That’s just not true.

My hardest challenge

It navigated the press area of the route, because I’ve never done it before, not to this extent. And I never knew that was all part of being an actor. And I don’t think anyone will know that until it happens to them. I’m so glad it happened to me now that I’m 41 because I think if it had happened to me in my early 20’s god knows what would have come out of my mouth. I looked at Cate Blanchett differently because not only was she a brilliant actress, but I was like, ‘Oh my god, you’re still fierce. You still show up to those awards and do those interviews and stuff. And how many years have you been doing this?’

Bridges of Madison County

The movies that make me cry

For someone who isn’t crazy about marriage, I’m such a romantic. Therefore, Madison County Bridges. My brother still talks about it because he grew up in a house full of women. He said, “I remember you guys crying over that movie.” So all romantic, of course. And I mean it’s obvious Me and Maria, but I don’t even have to explain why. It’s funny, I was teasing my brother the other day because he almost started crying at the end boss, and the only reason he didn’t was because of the guy next to him on the plane. He was afraid the man would say, “Oh my God.”

I like the character the most

Maybe Siobhan. But people know that Siobhán was really dignified in the sense that she didn’t need it, that people knew she was very intelligent, and things like that, whereas I actually do. Well, I mean, I don’t want people to know, but I wasn’t as worthy as them. I would say all parts contain parts of me, but… read Inishmore’s lieutenant, Maybe. However, at this point in my life, when I played her, it came very close to who I was and what I believed in.

Steve Martin

My Desert Island movies

Jesus Christ. What does a deserted island mean? Do you want to laugh or something? But a movie I might never get enough of? Education. Movie directed by Ron Howard. I watched it again recently and I thought, Jesus, now that I’m older, I really see the parenting theme in it, and I always connected with the kids. But you know what’s funny, they say Steve Martin is 35, and I was like, okay, he doesn’t look 35. The benchmark at the time was Steve Martin with his gray hair. He was 35. I was like, Jesus, this makes me feel 90.

Hannah and her sisters by Woody Allen. I think all the actresses in it were brilliant. I have always been a huge fan of Dianne Wiest. I mean, I know it’s time to say it now [regarding Allen]but I don’t want to discredit shows that I found really brilliant.

I mean there are a lot of them. This boy’s life, The Lost Boys, The golden child.

The first film I saw in the cinema

Yes. Actually, I was asked for a review The lion king. It was the first professional salary of my life. I was about ten years old. In the summer I sat at home and on the radio there was a debate between country people and city people. And we came from the country. I called the radio and said, “The townspeople think they’re so brilliant, but they’re not.” Anyway, the radio calls me back and they say, ‘Do you want to review a movie for us? Do you want to go to…? The lion king?” My review was: “It was excellent. I liked it very much. I thought it was brilliant.”
