Canadian artist The Weeknd is ready to take on a new challenge: the leap to the big screen. According to Deadline, the singer preparing his first feature filmco-written, produced and performed by himself.

Untitled for now, the original idea for The Weekend will be brought to the big screen by ‘A Moment in Time – Waves’ director Trey Edward Shults, who will return to the director’s chair after a four-year hiatus. His return comes through the front door, directing a cast consisting of two of the most successful stars of the current scene. Among the few things revealed in the commercial, the participation of Jenna Ortega, our favorite Wednesday, and Barry Keoghan, winner of the BAFTA 2023 and nominated at the next Oscars for best supporting actor for his performance in ‘Almas en torpo’, are confirmed by Inisherin.

The screenplay was written by The Weeknd himself along with Shultz and Reza Fahim, producer of “The Idol,” an HBO series in which the four-time Grammy winner plays one of the leads, Tedros. It is an original series from the creator of “Euphoria”, Sam Levinson, in which he shares the cast with Lily-Rose Depp (“The King”), daughter of Johnny Depp and French singer Vanessa Paradis.

Ortega and Shultz also occupy another position, that of producers, along with Harrison Kreiss, Kevin Turen, Fahim and Abel Makkonen Tesfaye (real name of The Weeknd), who is involved in this film on almost every level.

It’s not your first time

In 2020, on the occasion of the release of his album ‘After Hours’, the singer produced a short film of the same name, starring himself and directed by Anton Tammi, director of many of the video clips of the Canadian discography. In ‘After Hours’, The Weeknd plays himself leaving a concert then enters an elaborate sequence showing him confused, frustrated and in pain before reaching his final stage of resilience, an audiovisual trailer of what the album would be which would bring back R&B’s most famous Afro four years later.
