Netflix has released a new animated film titled The wizard’s elephantwhich is a “joyful animated retelling” of Newbery Award-winning author Kate DiCamillo’s classic novel. The story centers on a boy named Peter who goes on a journey to find his sister. The synopsis reads: “Peter (Noah Jupe) is in search of her long lost sister, and when she meets a fortune teller in the market square she has only one question on her mind: is her sister still alive? The answer—he must find a mysterious elephant—and the wizard who will summon it—sets Peter on a harrowing journey to complete three seemingly impossible tasks that will change the face of his city forever, taking him on the adventure of a lifetime. “

The film was directed by Wendy Rogers, an experienced visual effects supervisor in his feature film directorial debut. He said in a statement:

“I will forever be grateful for our brilliant crew at Netflix and Animal Logic who collectively designed and crafted a beautiful, surreal yet tangible world in which our extraordinarily layered and diverse cast of characters flourish.” The voice cast includes Sian Clifford, Pixie Davies, Natasia Demetriou, Dawn French, Brian Tyree Henry, Noah Jupe, Kirby Howell-Baptiste, Aasif Mandvi, Mandy Patinkin, Benedict Wong and Miranda Richardson. It feels a bit wonky, not exactly the most original or exciting story to tell. Enjoy.

“I hope you enjoy the cinematic journey into our legendary world and are inspired by Peter’s grit, determination and belief that anything is possible – his spirit resonates strongly for our day, a time when we don’t just have to believe that the world may be different, but we must take action to make a positive change!”

The wizard’s elephant will stream on Netflix starting March 17, 2023.
