An unfortunate translation error occurred at tonight’s BAFTA Film Awards in London’s Royal Festival Hall after Best Actress presenter Troy Kotsur announced Kerry Condon as the winner for her performance in The Banshees by Inisherin.
BAFTA confirmed to Deadline that Condon’s name was on the card, but the sign language interpreter providing the voice call for the audience mistakenly announced Carey Mulligan – nominated in the category for she said – as winner.
Kotsur and his onstage British Sign Language interpreter worked quickly to correct the mistake, so Condon stood up alone to travel to the stage. We are told that BAFTA and the BBC will correct the error in their editing process before the awards are televised later this evening. While the final four categories presented today will be broadcast live on the BBC, the remainder of the program will be time-shifted.
Condon and her Banshees Co-star Barry Keoghan won the Supporting Actress and Supporting Actor trophies, beating American favorites Angela Bassett and Ke Huy Quan.
