THE Harry Potter the movies are really great. The directors who hired them did a good job adapting some of the most popular books of all time, and the result is a film series with as much nostalgia and staying power as the novels. But one thing apparently could have made them even better, and it would have been Steven Spielberg hire one.
Before the first Harry Potter book was adapted to film, Warner Bros. was looking for the perfect director to kick off the franchise. Naturally, Spielberg came to mind, famous for bringing great adventure stories to the screen and captivating audiences of all ages. But he ended up turning down the opportunity. In a recent interview during awards season promoting his recent semi-autobiographical film, The FabelmansSpielberg spoke about the Harry Potter franchise pass, saying:
“There were several films that I chose not to make. They offered me Harry Potter. I chose to turn down the first ‘Harry Potter’ to basically spend the next year and a half with my family, my young children growing up. So I sacrificed a great franchise, which I’m very happy about today, looking back, I’m very happy that I did, to be with my family. Other times my family stayed in Los Angeles and I went overseas to tell a story.”
Spielberg met his wife, Kate Capshawwhile directing her in the film Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. They went on to marry in 1991 and, along with his two sons and her son with Amy Irving, welcomed four more. When Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone came out in 2001, one of the couple’s children was all grown up, one was 15 and another 12. Their other children were 10, 8, 4 and 4 years old. Now I understand why he died! Harry Potter would have been a huge undertaking, in another country, and he had little ones at home who needed him.
Instead, at the time, he made some great one-shots close to home in Los Angeles AI artificial intelligence, Minority reportAND Catch me if you can. These are all some of my favorite Spielberg movies. So everything worked out for the best.
