We have some exciting news for you all Calvin and Hobbes fan! Bill Wattersonthe genius behind the beloved comic, has returned to the publishing world after years of being in hiding and is teaming up with caricature artist John Kascht to bring us an “adult fairy tale” called The Mysteries.

Publisher Simon & Schuster describes the book as a “mysterious and beautifully illustrated tale of what lies beyond human understanding.” The story is set long ago in a kingdom that is “plagued by unexplained calamities. Hoping to end the torment, the king sends his knights to discover the origin of the mysterious events. Years later, a single battered knight returns.

Some preview images have been shared for the book and it looks like a double page storybook with a short narrative on one side and an illustration on the other. The publisher says that for these illustrations, Watterson and Kascht “worked together for several years in an unusually close partnership” and “abandoned their past methods of working” to create something new.

As you will see, they have created some beautiful but creepy fantasy-style artwork. Kascht’s caricature work is famous, appearing on billboards and magazine covers, but it’s the work of Calvin and Hobbes by Watterson that most people know, this book is very different from that. I’ve been a Calvin and Hobbes fan since I was a kid, but I’m excited to see Watterson create something new and very different!

Looks like Watterson and Kascht will deliver something magical and I can’t wait to read about it!
