EXCLUSIVE: For the first time since pre-pandemic times, a Super Bowl trailer surpassed 100 million social media views within 24 hours of the Big Game.
It was Disney/Marvel Studios Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 with 134.1 million views across TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, Twitter and Facebook as measured by Social Media Analytics Corp RelishMix in their annual Most Viewed Super Bowl Movie Trailers survey.
In fact, according to RelishMix records, the James Gunn-directed threequel is the most-watched Super Bowl movie after Big Game Day. The film opens at the summer box office on May 5. The last movie trailer to top 100 million views was Universal’s pre-Covid launch F9 during Super Bowl 2020, which reached 110.9 million, fueled by a concert in Miami on the Friday before this year’s Big Games Sunday.
Warner Bros/DCs also broke through that year The Lightning (June 16) and Universal’s Quick X (May 19), which are the third and fourth most-watched Super Bowl trailers in RelishMix history with 97.4 million and 94.1 million 24-hour viewers, respectively. The Marvel Studio trailer was released last year Doctor Strange in the multiverse of madness had the most traffic after the game with 93.1 million views.
Important to note HAD 3 And Flash left their fans cold on Super Bowl Sunday. Some studios make a habit of releasing their big game trailers days ahead of time ie Uni posted this Quick X Trailer airs online Friday morning after a Thursday night LA launch party with the stars of the Vin Diesel-directed and Amazon Studios/MGM pic Heaven and also Paramount scream VI before Super Bowl Sunday.
In all, the studios aired 13 trailers on Super Bowl Sunday this year, three more than last year’s 10 titles. Since 2014, there have been an average of 11 film spots per game. Most of the movie locations are preloaded into the game, though studios don’t know if there will be a blowout — and 11 of the 13 were actually preloaded by halftime.
Two factors behind the big surge in online viewership: With theaters reopening and moviegoers returning, Hollywood movie campaigns are now in full swing. During Super Bowl 2021, when NYC and LA theaters were not open, there were fewer trailers (low six) with the most watched movie spot F9 (again), which only got 44.5 million views. People weren’t ready to return to the theater, and the studios weren’t ready to promote it.
The other factor contributing to more views for movie trailers is RelishMix’s inclusion of TikTok.
“The measurement continues to evolve as social platforms change from year to year – with the same comparative statistics for each of the titles from the 24 hours from pre-match to post-match to Monday evening of the following day – with a view to the viral.” Effect of big game as social word-of-mouth, material is also shared and reposted by superfans,” reports the Analytics Corp.
Big win here for Warner Bros Flash as they usually sit on the sidelines at the Super Bowl when it comes to movie trailers. They reported that one of the social analytics services that Burbank, CA, regularly used Flash was the biggest trailer debut during the Super Bowl (Wavemetrix), the best in-game promotion among any advertiser, and the best performing Super Bowl movie trailer since 2018 (EDO), with #TheFlashMovie trending globally in both latitudes (number trends) terms from Michael Keaton to Supergirl) and other titles last before (ListenFirst). No numbers were given. But hopefully this move will convince David Zaslav’s Warner Discovery to release more movie trailers in future Super Bowls. The studio posted the photo before the game on Friday. DC co-chairman Gunn announced The Lightning as “probably one of the best superhero movies of all time”.
