Lucasfilm will reportedly bring ROGUE SQUADRON back to the drawing board as a Disney+ series

Looks like Lucasfilm isn’t ready to walk away Rogue Squadron Still. The long awaited Star Wars project, once planned as a feature film directed by Patty Jenkinsit will reportedly be reimagined as a Disney+ series instead.

In December 2020, Lucasfilm made a big splash when they announced Rogue Squadron with an elaborate promotional video showing Jenkins walking along an airstrip before climbing into a full-size X-wing.

The director described the story as a high-speed adventure centered on a new generation of starfighter pilots, something that has Star Wars fans eager for a fresh, adrenaline-fueled take on the galaxy’s epic dogfights.

But since that announcement, the project has gone through years of turbulence. Jenkins initially had to postpone work on the film due to scheduling conflicts Wonder Woman 3 AND Cleopatraboth of which subsequently crashed.

By 2022, Rogue Squadron it was officially discontinued, and the following year reports stated that it had been completely scrapped. Subsequently, the project resurfaced in “active development”, although it never received a release date and quietly slipped from Lucasfilm’s priority list, especially with Shawn Levy now in development Star Wars: Starfighter.

Now, according to a new report, the project is taking a new flight path. Insider @MyTimeToShineH says so Rogue Squadron is currently in development as a Star Wars Television series.

This potential pivot is not entirely unexpected. Kathleen KennedyPresident of Lucasfilm, he had already mentioned it previously Rogue Squadron it could be reworked into a series format.

Considering the studio’s current focus on streaming projects, the move makes sense, especially since the only Star Wars show currently confirmed for Disney+ is Ahsoka Season 2.

This raises an important question: What does this mean for Jenkins’ involvement? The director addressed his complicated story with Rogue Squadron earlier this year, explaining how his plans have shifted from project to project.

“So when I left Star Wars Do Wonder Woman 3I thought maybe I’ll come back Star Wars After Wonder Woman 3” Jenkins said last March.

“So we made a deal for that to happen, we started a deal, but I was thinking about doing it Wonder Woman. When it was all over, Lucasfilm and I were like, “Oh, we have to get this deal done.” We concluded the agreement just as the strike was taking place.”

“So now I have to a draft of Star Warsand so we’ll see what happens there. You know, like, who knows?” he continued. “It’s hard, they’ve got a tough job ahead of them, what the first movie they’ll make will be.

“There are other directors who worked, but now I’m back to work Rogue Squadronand we’ll see what happens. We need to develop it, you know, get it to where we’re both super happy with it.

Should the project evolve into a series, Jenkins’ level of creative control remains uncertain. But the idea of exploring a squadron of starfighter pilots across multiple episodes could give the story, and its characters, the breathing room to soar in a way that a single film couldn’t.

As described years ago, Rogue Squadron was meant to feature “a new generation of starfighter pilots as they earn their wings and risk their lives on a high-speed, border-crossing thrill ride.”

If Lucasfilm can finally bring that concept to life on Disney+, it could fill a much-needed gap in the Star Wars line-up and bring some classic space combat energy back to the franchise.

Of course, after years of development stops and starts, fans are understandably wary. Rogue Squadron he had one of the most difficult journeys of all Star Wars project since Disney purchased Lucasfilm. However, if this latest report is true, history may finally have found a new flight plan.
