Universal/DreamWorks Animations Puss in Boots: The Last Wish Happy Valentine’s Day on the way to another global milestone. The spin-off sequel passed the $400 million mark and Tuesday’s numbers brought the global kitty to its feet $401.5 million. The breakdown is $160.1 million domestic and $241.4 million at the international box office.
The Oscar-nominated film, from directors Joel Crawford and Januel Mercado, remains the third-biggest studio animated film since the pandemic began, topping the overseas charts Black Adam to become the 11th highest-grossing studio title of 2022 internationally. It is number 12 worldwide.
This weekend will be appreciated Puss in Boots: The Last Wish will surpass Fantastic Beasts: Secrets of Dumbledore, Sonic The Hedgehog Book 2 And Not mapped to become the #9 biggest studio release of 2022 worldwide.
The Antonio Banderas/Salma Hayek sequel went overseas early and was built with huge word of mouth and slick drops. It recently opened in the UK, earning $13.8 million from two frames. The top market is Mexico for $23.9 million, followed by France ($20.3 million), Germany ($16.2 million), Brazil ($15.4 million) and Australia ($14 million). Japan is still coming on March 17th.
As we noted when cat 2 Universal passed $300 million in January, shipping five of the top six studio animation titles worldwide during the pandemic era. Tops for Unis Minions: The Rise of Gru ($942M), followed by sing 2 ($413 million), Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, The Bad Boys ($252 million) and The Croods: A New Era ($227 million).
The Last Wish is the #1 DreamWorks Animation title of all time in 28 international markets to date: Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, Chile, Peru, Ecuador, Lebanon, Kazakhstan, Turkey, Bolivia, Romania, Lithuania, Bulgaria, Venezuela, Estonia , Latvia , Georgia, Azerbaijan, Kyrgyzstan, Armenia, Nigeria, Uzbekistan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Moldova, Albania, Macedonia and Tajikistan.
It is the second highest grossing DWA film in Central America, Saudi Arabia, Serbia, Paraguay and Sri Lanka.
